This was the first significant law restricting immigration into the United States based on nationality. It prohibited the immigration of Chinese laborers for ten years and prevented those already in the U.S. from becoming citizens. The act reflected widespread anti-chinease sentiment and economic anxieties. The act had a significant and lasting impact on Chinese American communities which contributed to discrimination and hardship.
