Because of the Soviet Union's disregard for the SALT agreements in its invasion of Afghanistan, Canada and other Western nations refused to attend the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympic Games. It was one of several protests against the Soviet Union. The boycott in the 1980 Moscow Olympics later caused a similar boycott of other nations in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
