The reintegration era, which lasted until the late 1970s, advocated for very limited use of incarceration; only a small proportion of offenders were imprisoned, and short periods of incarceration were most commonly recommended. Probation was the preferred sentence, particularly for nonviolent offenders. Indeterminate sentences were utilized, and deinstitutionalization was the theme for this period of corrections. However, this era in corrections was short-lived and received a great deal of criticism. Indeed, the prior medical model of corrections had hardly come to its full conclusion before the reintegration model was also being seriously questioned by skeptics.
