Allied forces launched an amphibious and airborne attack on the island of Sicily, which is part of Italy. They successfully defeated Axis troops and the victory gave allies control of the mediterranean. This also led to the fall of Mussolini in Italy and allowed more Allied invasion of mainland in Europe.
