Major Issues: Conflicts over what to do with the National Bank after Jackson dismantled it, discrepancies over state vs. federal power, brewing sectional tensions, and economic downturn prior to the Panic of 1837.-

Contribution to Civil War: Strengthened sectional divisions, both with differences in how the Whig party operated depending on the part of the country, as well as Van Buren favoring pro-slavery sentiments, and weakened national unity, with the Whig’s not being able to get behind on singular candidate.
