John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry (16 out 1859 ano – 18 out 1859 ano)

Descrição:

John Brown, alongside 21 other men, including his sons, had a plan to raid Harpers Ferry in present-day West Virginia, arm enslaved people in the area, and spark a large-scale slave uprising throughout the South. Despite his attempts, he and his supporters would either be surrounded or killed within the next 36 hours by the US Marine and the local militia. Brown would eventually be hanged as a result of treason against Virginia and attempting to stir up a rebellion. This uprising would contribute to the Civil War, because it proved to Southerners that Northerners would indeed use violence to stop the institution of slavery, and it deepened overall mistrust between the North and South.
