Lecompton Constitution (19 out 1857 ano – 8 nov 1857 ano)
Descrição:
Written in Lecompton, Kansas, the Lecompton Constitution was a proposed state constitution that would have allowed slavery in Kansas should it have been passed. It was written with the goal of setting guidelines for the creation of a new state WITH slavery. However, controversy arose when a vote over the constitution was deemed unfair by anti-slavery supporters, because the option that stated the constitution would exist without slavery would still protect enslaved people within the state of Kansas, essentially still allowing slavery. After many arguments and debates, Congress would eventually reject it, and after a re-vote that was fair, the Lecompton Constitution wouldn’t be passed. The outcome was that Kansas would be admitted as a free state, however this outcome still didn’t come without controversy. It contributed towards the Civil War, because there was a serious divide between the North and South when it came to the fairness and the amount of corruption in the vote.
