The Mercury-Atlas 6 mission, also known as Friendship 7, was the first American orbital spaceflight, launched on February 20, 1962. Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. piloted the Friendship 7 capsule, which was carried to orbit by an Atlas rocket.
