Despite the ban, golf began to gain popularity in Scotland during the 1500s. The game’s development was further supported in 1552 when the Golf Act allowed the sport to be played openly in Scotland. The first golf course, the Old Links in St. Andrews, Scotland, was laid out in the 16th century.
