Direct action (1 jan 1946 ano – 1 jan 1947 ano)

Descrição:

Communal strikes broke out in Bengal and Bihar leading to large scale devastation. Gandhiji travelled to Calcutta to bring peace and calm the affected areas. Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, stated in 1947 that by 1948, India would receive Independence and be partitioned into two sovereign nations. The congress reluctantly agreed in order to avoid further violence and thus the India independence act was passed with the provision for partition of India. The Act laid down the guidelines for the country's partition and made India and Pakistan two independent nations. The princely states were allowed to join Pakistan, India, or continue to function as independent kingdoms.
