Before the Industrial Revolution most homes, workplaces, and streets were lit by oil lamps, candles, or rushlights. (Ref.2) Some of the first public gas lighting appeared around 1807 in London’s popular Pall Mall. By 1850(Ref.2), most towns and cities across Britain used gas lighting. Gas lighting was relatively cheap and efficient. The lamps were seen to help reduce crime and improve public safety. The lamps were first lit by lamplighters which had the important role of igniting and extinguishing the lamps.(Ref.2) this affected the economy.
