Roxelana (1 jan 1505 ano – 1 jan 1558 ano)
Descrição:
Roxelana was born about 1505 in western Ukraine. As a young girl, she was captured by Crimean Tatar raiders and was taken to Constantinople and sold as a slave. She entered the harem and became one of Sultan Suleiman's hundreds of concubines. She bore her first son, Mehemtn, who was the royal favorite. By Ottoman Imperial custom, a concubine was only allowed to birth one son, then mother and son were sent away. However, Roxela gave birth to 4 more sons after Mehmet. Suleiman married Roxelana, freeing her from slavery. Roxelana corresponded on matters of state with the King of Poland and with the wife and sister of the shah of Perisa. She became a patroness of public works, commissioning many projects for the Ottoman royal architect Sinan. She also increased the importance of her harem by moving it to Topkapi Palace, where the Sultan lived. Roxelana died in 1558. When Sleiman passed away, he was succeeded by Selim ll, Roxelana's last surviving son.
