Le Tombeau de Couperin (Maurice Ravel) (1 jan 1914 ano – 1 jan 1917 ano)

Descrição:

Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel is a suite for solo piano composed between 1914 and 1917. This piece was written during World World I and while the Tombeau “…memorializes Couperin…its primary focus is on six friends of Ravel who died in the war. Each of the six movements is dedicated to one of these friends” (Gutman). While Ravel had originally meant for the piece to be a piano solo, it was later written as for orchestration in 1919. The orchestration uses instruments such as flutes, oboes, and a harp. One musically significant moment occurs in the fourth movement (approximately 12 minutes in), in which the melody is energetic and almost cheerful. This greatly contrasts what one would expect from a piece that was dedicated to friends Ravel had lost to the war. In Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ravel is able to create a piece that is both a tribute to the friends he lost while also paying homage to French Baroque music.
