After 1450, European peoples tapped existing networks and expanded the Islamic Slave Trade into the Atlantic Slave Trade. The first leg of Triangular trade carried horses, European manufactured goods and gunpowder weapons to sub-Saharan Africa where they were exchanged for slaves. The Second leg, also known as the Middle Passage, brought enslaved Africans to the Caribbean and the Americas to work on cash-crop plantations. As European demand for slaves grew, some African chieftans organized raiding parties or launched wars to capture prisoners of war for the slave trade. The Kingdoms of Asante, Dahomey, and Oyo took advantage of the slave trade by building powerful states with the use of firearms.
