Kingdom of Kongo (1 jan 1390 ano – 1 jan 1862 ano)
Descrição:
The Kingdom of Kongo was established when military pressures encouraged kin-based societies to coalesce and form a new state. The Kingdom of Congo participated in lucractive maritime trade in the Atlantic. It had a king and officials who oversaw military, juducial, and financial affairs, as well as six provinces governed by administrators who supervised several districts. Within districts, villages were ruled by chiefs who served as local authority figures as in traditional kin-based societies. In 1483, a small Portuguese fleet reconnoitered the Congo basin and established friendly commercial relations with the Kingdom of Kongo with whom they they maintained close political and diplomatic relations with. The kings of the Kongo also converted to Christianity and King Nzinga became a devout Catholic. However, Portugese merchants sought copper, ivory, and slaves from Africa in exchange for textiles, weapons, and advisors. The Portuguese made alliances with local authorities and provided alliances in exchange for slaves which sometimes undermined the kings of Kongo. Relations with the Kingdom of the Kongo and the Portuguese declined when Portugal began to explore slave raiding opportunities elsewhere, leading to a eventual war with Kongo.
