Colombian Exchange (1 fev 1492 ano – 1 fev 1800 ano)

Descrição:

The Colombian Exchange was the global diffusion of plants, food crops, animals, human populations and disease pathogens between the Americas and the old world after the voyages of Christopher Colombus and other European mariners. The spread of diseases to the Western hemisphere such as smallpox and measles brought sharp population decline to native populations in the America. For example, epidemic smallpox ravaged the Aztec and Incan empires, destroying their defensive capabilities and allowing Spanish conquistadores to take power. Over time, the Colombian Exchange increased the human population due to the global exchange of animals and food crops. Wheat, sugar, rice, bananas, apples, cherries, peas, citrus, cattle, pigs, sheep, and horses traveled from Eurasia to the Western Hemsiphere. Wheat grew well on the plains of North America and the Pampas of Argentina. Yams, Okra, Collard Greens went from Africa to the Americas. American crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, peanut, manioc, papayas, and tobacco traveled from Americas to Europe. Maize and potatoes contributed to European diets and livestock feed and quinine became essential treatment for Malaria in Europe.
