Shah Abbas (1 mar 1588 ano – 1 jul 1629 ano)

Descrição:

Shah Abbas revitalized the Safavid empire by moving the capital to Isfahan, encouraging trade and reforming administrative and military institutions. For example, he incorporated slaves of the royal household into the army, increased usage of gunpoweder weapons and sought European assistance against the Ottoms whom he mercilessly harassed in a series of wars beginning in 1603 all the way up to his death. He brought most of Northwest Iran, the Caucasus, and Mesopotamia under Safavid rule. Shah Abbas also promoted Isfahan as a commercial center and even allowed Christian monastic orders to set up missions there. European merchants sought Safavid raw silk, carpets and cermanics and so the English East India Company, the French East India Company and the Dutch VOC all traded actively with the Safavids. The English company even sent advisors to introduce gunpowder weapons to the Safavid armed forces to try to curry favor with them.
