Dom Duarte I (1391–1438), King of Portugal, is best known for his support of Portuguese maritime exploration, including the successful crossing of Cabo Bojador in 1434, and his role in the Disaster of Tangier in 1437.
Duarte also contributed to Portuguese culture with his philosophical work, "Leal Conselheiro" (Loyal Counselor).
After Duarte's death in 1438, his six-year-old son, Afonso V, became king.
His reign lasted only for five years.
