The U.S. acquired vast territories from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The question of whether slavery would be allowed in these new territories fueled sectional tensions.
The Wilmot Proviso (1846), which proposed banning slavery in territories acquired from Mexico, inflamed debates over the expansion of slavery. The failure to resolve these disputes peacefully pushed the nation toward more aggressive political confrontations in the 1850s, such as the Compromise of 1850 and Bleeding Kansas.
