The Great Darkness (30 ago 1944 ano – 7 set 1959 ano)

Descrição:

Maurice Duplessis is an extremely controversial leader in Quebec's history. To some, his time in power is considered to be "the Great Darkness".

In many ways, he was an exceptional role model to French-Canadians, promoting Quebec's unique identity and society. Among other things, he advocated for greater provincial power, and introduced the fleur-de-lis, Quebec's flag that bares traditional French symbolism. The Roman Catholic Church also played a large role in the preservation of Quebec's culture during his reign, by preaching the importance of Quebec’s traditional agricultural roots, Catholic faith, and family bonds.

Although Duplessis' brought these significant positive changes to Quebec, he was riddled with corruption and controversy: he accepted bribes, transferred thousands of falsely certified children to asylums, and began the suppression of unions while guaranteeing cheap labour. In addition, Duplessis gave business owners such favourable conditions, so they would express their gratitude by contributing to Union Nationale, thus benefiting Duplessis' campaign.
