2014: Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) begin planning pipeline, during "Bakken oil boom" (large oil reserves, hydraulic fracking)
prior to DAPL, oil was shipped on dangerous "bomb trains"
2015: Corps rejects ETP proposal to cross Missouri River 10 miles north of Bismarck, capital of North Dakota, because of opposition from Bismarck residents.
Corps ignores Standing Rock's opposition, environmental racism
Early 2016: dozens of Standing Rock, Cheyenne River Lakota, and Rosebud Sioux members formed water protector camps
2016: North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois approve of DAPL
did not require overarching federal permit
Corps avoided required environmental impact analysis (National Environmental Policy Act [NEPA]), and required public review process (Clean Water Act)
Jul 2016: developer received most of the permits needed to start construction

2020: district court rules the Corps failed to meet NEPA by providing an inadequate environmental review
revoked Trump-era Lake Oahe easement, ceded the decision to the Corps, continues to operate illegally on federal property
Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has issued over 106 safety violations since 2002
DAPL has leaked at least 5 times since 2017
Sep 2023: Corps published draft environmental impact statement (DEIS)
Nov 2023: Activists and Tribal members call for the Corps to reject the pipeline
Corps says it will complete its final EIS on DAPL by the end of 2024
