Iranian Crisis (4 nov 1979 ano – 20 nov 1980 ano)
Descrição:
It was widely seen as an act against the U.S. and its influence in Iran, including its perceived attempts to undermine the Iranian Revolution and its long-standing support of the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in 1979. Revolutionary forces storm the embassy and a covert intelligence site, seizing both staff and sensitive materials. Byrd authorizes covert retaliation, and U.S. personnel are harmed or killed in an attempted rescue, evacuation, or embassy defense. Byrd doubles down, ordering precision strikes on Iranian assets (e.g., Revolutionary Guard bases), institutes blockades or no-fly zones in the Gulf, and approves covert actions to arm opposition groups within Iran. However, his actions become increasingly public on the world stage, and the bungling becomes an election campiagn killer.
