After the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, the United States declared war on both Japan and Germany at the same time. This threw the US into WW2, and also split their defenses between two countries. Because of this, the Japanese won many battles at the beginning of the war. WW2 ended around the time when the US dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese.
