memphis (1 jan 1981 ano – 1 jan 1988 ano)

Descrição:

colour and shape were the highlights of the memphis movement. designs were often referred to as in-your-face, standout, and bizarre.

industrial design (2nd image) -
'casablanca sideboard' by ettore sottsass.

designed and produced in milan, italy in 1981.

the cabinet was meant to be placed in a living or dining room and serve primarily as a cupboard and wine rack, but also a room divider. it was intended for the followers of the memphis movement and others who were interested in obscure furniture, and as the piece was very expensive it was more aimed at the upper-class.

while expensive, the sideboard consists of wood and plastic laminate with a 'cheap' fibreboard base.

at the time of design, many consumers were getting tired of all the flat colours and overly-simple forms of modernist furniture, so the members of the memphis movement, sottsass especially, sought to create something different and new.

the piece was inspired by 1950s furniture and the 'wipe-clean surfaces' of american diners. the movement's general philosophy was about standing out and being the total opposite of minimalist, hence the vibrant colours and garish patterns so often seen on memphis works.

sottsass' famous sideboard is quite unique and nothing quite like it has ever been made, though the memphis design movement made a comeback when its creator died on the last day of 2007.
