arts + crafts (1 jan 1850 ano – 1 jan 1914 ano)

Descrição:

emphasised traditional, hand-made production methods as a way to protest against the industrial revolution.

environmental design (2nd image) -
'pimpernel' by william morris, who is widely credited as the founding father of the arts and crafts movement.

'pimpernel' was designed in britain with the intent purely to hang it in morris' own dining room. hence, he and any others who visited his home would see an example of his design movement.

this piece is a wall hanging, ink block-printed on paper with symmetrical floral imagery.

the movement was intended to empower skilled craftsmen whose work would be rendered obsolete by the industrial revolution, which was churning out poor quality creations that morris believed men could make to a far better standard.

this piece took inspiration from japanese wood block paintings, and their style of simplifying shapes and decoration into smooth lines with muted colours.

both 'pimpernel' and morris influenced art nouveau, particularly artists like alphonse mucha, who frequently emulated the flowery, detailed patterns often seen in the arts and crafts movement.
