Belshazzar was the son of Nabonidus, the last king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, and served as co-regent during his father's reign.Although he never assumed the title of king, he exercised full royal authority in Babylon, especially during Nabonidus's prolonged absence in Arabia.
Belshazzar's mother, Nitocris, is thought to have been a daughter of Nebuchadnezzar II, making Belshazzar his grandson.
