Barack Obama and the myth of the post-racial era (1 jan 2016 ano – 1 jan 2024 ano)
Descrição:
When Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States of America on November 4th, 2008, there was a widespread consensus that this marked a historical event. The fact that he was the first African American president in US history resulted in defining his presidency in terms of race: He has to be considered as a “racial figure” and the assessment of his presidency is dependent on its racial characteristics. It did not take long before the average Joe within the American media circus turned to the American public with the bold, resolute, and inherently hopeful message of the advent of a post-racial era. Public figures, such as Rudolph Giuliani, chimed in on this chorus of hope and thus gave the whole spiel more gravitas. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews went even further in stating that “[Obama] is post-racial by all appearances. You know, I forgot he
was black tonight for an hour” (Matthews).
