Great Migration occurred in part because of the Jim Crow laws that Takumi just mentions. This was a massive population shift of about 6 million African Americans from rural areas in the southern United States to urban areas in the north, especially New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh, that occurred from the 1910s through the 1970s.
