 The Fatimid Caliphate, an Isma'ili Shia dynasty, spanned from the 10th to 12th centuries CE across North Africa and West Asia. At its zenith, it included regions like Egypt, the Maghreb, Sicily, the Levant, and the Hejaz. Founded under the leadership of missionary Abu Abdallah and Caliph Abdallah al-Mahdi Billah, it established Cairo as its capital. Noted for its military prowess, cultural patronage, and religious tolerance, the empire was a major Mediterranean power until its decline in the late 11th and 12th centuries, culminating in Saladin founding the Ayyubid dynasty in 1171.
