During the 18th century, advocates of women's rights were particularly active in Britain, France, and North America. Mary was among the most prominent. In 1792 she published an influential essay titled A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. She insisted on the right of women to education: it would enable them to contribute to society by preparing them for professional occupations and participation in political life
