They benefitted greatly during the 18th century as they established plantations and ranches in the colonies and participated in rapidly expanding trade with Spain and Portugal. Their opportunity came as a result of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe because Napoleon invaded and conquered Portugal in 1807 and Spain in 1808. In the Spanish case, this effectively left Spanish settlers in the Americas to rule themselves until Napoleon was defeated and the Spanish king was restored in 1814. As their experiences with self-rule, between 1810 - 1825 creoles led movements that brought independence to all Spanish colonies in the Americas - except Cuba, and Puerto Rico- and established creole- dominated republics
