Sequnces! (1 jan 850 ano – 1 jan 1150 ano)
Descrição:
An incredibly popular form, Medieval sequences were monophonic syllabic text settings that usually had paired forms. They were additions to the mass that followed the Alleluia, likely originally starting as non-textual tropes of simply extending the melisma at the end of the alleluia.
Because of their flexability and lack of restriction, they remained popular from notker balbulus (840-914) all the way to Hildegard!
Thousands of sequences survive, with a notable example being the dies irae.
