Period of Racial Segregation (1 jan 1820 ano – 1 jan 1857 ano)
Descrição:
1820s-1857: Following a brief period of relaxed restrictions on free Blacks in the North, segregation was implemented in the 1820s to 1857 which restricted the right to vote based on race. The insurrections and growth of the free black population led to Southern states passing laws hindering their movement. As white men gained universal suffrage, blacks came to be viewed as anti-citizens. They were denied fundamental rights of citizens, like rights to vote, obtain a jury trial, testify in court, retain counsel, participation in certain trades, and barred from public institutions like libraries and schools. The 1850 Fugitive Slave Act and 1857 Dred Scott v. Sanford case served as major limitations to Black rights.
