As the country expanded the differences over slavery were tearing the country apart. There were problems in the Senate as Missouri wanted to join the Union as a slave state tipping the power to them, until finally reaching the Missouri Compromise. Next came the Compromise of 1850 which helped Congress get out of another deadlock. In 1860 Lincoln wins the presidency and the South secedes from the Union but they will fight to get them back. Finally, in April 12 of 1861 the South fired on Fort Sumter causing the start of the Civil War.
