Lasting the shortest period of time out of any of the musical periods, the Impressionism period included composition styles that really focussed on creating moods, emotions, and it really deviated from traditional harmonic progressions. Most pieces in this period were very short and brief, therefore we can see that a lot of the composers prefered shorter forms and styles, such as the nocturne, arabesque, and preludes. This period further stretched from the romantic period in means of the element of how many composers had more freedom and personal aspects of form in their pieces.
