The Renaissance time followed from the middle ages (dark ages), and it was a time of discovery, innovation and exploration for musicians. Many of the instruments were different to modern day, but there was a set style and theme, where it included a steady beat, balanced phrases, and a very rich texture in the music. Also, in this period, music was dominated by the church and higher ups in most European nation's hierarchies, and there were no big groups or orchestras of different instruments and musicians, instead there were only some small ensembles and chamber music was popular among the wealthy.
