Eugenics Movement (Approximately 1900 - 1940) (1 jan 1900 ano – 1 jan 1935 ano)
Descrição:
Mendel's law of inheritance was rediscovered in the early 1900s. Advocates of eugenics, such as Charles Davenport and Madison Grant, misapplied Darwinian/Mendelian theory to push for policies like forced sterilizations and marriage restrictions, predominantly targeting disadvantaged groups. The function of eugenics was to prevent the feeble-minded from reproducing and to produce "fitter families." Although the movement began to lose credibility and support by the late 1930s, its principles were adopted by Nazi Germany, leading to its horrific application in the form of racial hygiene programs during World War II (VanMattson, 2023, Lecture 11).
