The war involved many of the world's great powers and was centered in Europe. The impact of World War I on psychology was profound and multifaceted, influencing both the content and methodology of psychological research and practice.
The war led to the recognition and study of psychological trauma among soldiers, known at the time as "shell shock." This phenomenon highlighted the psychological toll of warfare and contributed to the understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The need for efficient and effective methods to assess the mental fitness of soldiers during the war led to the development and widespread use of psychological testing.
There was an emergence of military psychology as a distinct field. The war impacted developmental and cross-cultural psychology and methods for psychotherapy and rehabilitation (Keene, 1994 ; Christie, 2013).
