Privatisations (1 jan 1979 ano – 1 jan 1993 ano)

Descrição:

One of Thatcher's main goal in government would be reducing the budget deficit. This would involve decreasing public spending and increasing revenue. The main contributor to this was privatisation.
Throughout the 1980s many publicly owned companies were privatised:
1979: British Petroleum
1984: British telecoms-When privatization took off, Jaguar, Enterprise Oil
1986: British Gas- Largest share offer in history
1987: Rolls Royce
1988: British Steel
1993: British Rail
The ideology behind privatization was one of anti-socialist. Private sectors were believed to be better at spending money than public sectors.

Critics argued that companies were sold off cheaply in order to sell shares. This would ensure shareholders votes.
Privatized enterprises would also cut back people. However some found security in their jobs.

A lot of revenue was made to the government.
People owning industries rose to nine million, however the number of share owned by individuals fell by a third.
