According to Criminologist John Irwin, there are three dominant types of institutions. These three were;
1) Big house: A walled prison with large cell blocks that contained stacks of 3 or more tiers of one- or two-man cells.
2) Correctional institution: Became dominant in the 1950s. Generally smaller than big houses. They did not replace bog houses, only supplemented them.
3) Contemporary Violent: Arose by default as the correctional institution. What it ended in were many prisons that were power vacuums that was filled with inmate gang violence and interracial hatred.
