 Shah Jahan (Akbar's grandson): builds Taj Mahal as a shrine to his favorite wife who died during childbirth
Architecture blends Persian, Ottoman, and Indian styles
Incorporates elements from Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity
- carved verses from the Quran, minarets, elaborate gardens to represent Islamic view of heaven
- carved lotus flowers which are a Hindu symbol for life
- Christian art style of inlaying jewels into marble
Shah Jahan's son overthrows him and imprisons him because people are so unhappy with the amount of money he spent ("wasted") to build the Taj Mahal- makes empire less stable
