Why revolution? Why a reaction versus "imperialism"? What were the reasons and sources of discontent in Cuba that could lead to revolution?

Why "imperialism"?
Foreigners owned 70% of the arable land.
Cuba obtained around 70% of its consumer goods from the US in direct barter for Cuban sugar, in a deal that gave the US outsized share of the profits from Cuban industry and agriculture.

By the late 1950’s, American capital controlled:
90% of Cuba’s mines
80% of its public utilities
50% of its railways
40% of its sugar production
25% of its bank deposits.
