With the formation of the Bulgarian ethnicity in the mid-10th century, the Byzantines usually called the Bulgarians Moesi, and their lands, Moesia.Byzantine official and historian Niketas Choniates (c. 1155 – 1217) wrote that the barbarians of the Haemus region, formerly known as Moesians, were now known as Vlachs.

The Ohrid Legend written by Demetrios Chomatenos describes him as one of the European Moesians, commonly known as Bulgarians. Moesians were displaced in ancient times by the military conquest of Alexander the Great, to Olympus situated near Brusa in the direction of the North Ocean and to the Dead Sea. After a long time had passed, with formidable troops they crossed the Danube and captured all the neighboring regions: Pannonia and Dalmatia, Thrace and Illyricum, and and much of Macedonia and Thessaly.

Marcus Terentius Varro Lucullus was a consul of ancient Rome in 73 BC. As proconsul of Macedonia in 72 BC, he defeated the Bessi (Thracian Tribe) in Thrace and advanced to the Danube (where allegedly Mysians were fought) and the west coast of the Black Sea. In addition, he was marginally involved in the Third Servile War (Spartacus' War).
