After the capture of Nanking by the Japanese military, there was a massacre of the Chinese citizens who lived in the city. The official estimate of civilians/unarmed soldiers killed was 300,000. Of those 300,000, over 20,000 Chinese women had been raped during the Nanking occupation. Of those 20,000, many were killed afterwards. In addition to rape, other crimes such as murder, theft, and arson had also been committed.
