Thomas Jefferson was born in the colony of Virginia in America, into a middle class family. His father was a plantation surveyor, and the family lived comfortably. His father got a plantation through a will, so when he died, Jefferson got a fourth of the plantation. Jefferson was educated, and he went to the College of William and Mary where he learned to read and write in Greek and Latin. He also studied law, which helped him become a lawyer. Although Jefferson was against slavery, he still owned slaves who worked on his plantation. Thomas Jefferson was influenced by many Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution thinkers. He was also able to write part of the Declaration of Independence.
