Voltaire was a French philosopher and writer. He wanted money, but did not want to work for it. So he found a loophole in the lottery, and won it so he could devote his time to writing. Voltaire disliked religion because he thought people at that time did not follow the rules of the religion and instead just followed whatever rules they wanted to follow. He wrote a book called "Candide", which follows 3 friends who travel the world. When they reach the Ottoman Empire, they are told to "Tend their own garden." This phrase means you should not care about the society or everyday politics and you should instead focus on yourself and your family. This phrase would become Voltaire's most famous phrase. But, his big idea was the 'Freedom of Speech'. This means that everyone can say anything they want. This was Voltaire's big idea, and it is still followed to this day.
