The Battle of Shanghai was the first of 22 major clashes between Japanese and Chinese forces in the 2nd Sino-Japanese war. The battle had three stages, and after 3 months of fighting the Chinese retreated resulting in a Japanese victory. It was one of the biggest battles of World War II, as well as one of the bloodiest. Due to the similarities between the two battles, the Battle of Shanghai is known as the “Stalingrad on the Yangtze” (Yangtze is a river in China).
