The French revolution was inspired by enlightenment ideals and by the American revolution. It initially sought to put a fair and just society in place (to replace the corrupt and enormously wealthy monarchy under Louis 16 and Marie Antoinette) but was ridiculously bloody and unfair. Even one of the original founders of the revolution was put on trial and executed. The guillotine was an important factor of the French revolution for the way it allowed quick mass execution. The revolution ended once Napoleon took power and began a series of wars for territory in Europe.
