The enlightenment was a period of time in Europe in which many ideas spread, especially in France. Thinkers began to return to classical greek ideas. These people became known as philosophes. Philosophes such as John Locke, Olympe de Gouges, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau believed that mankind could be improved through rational thought. The enlightenment later encouraged revolutions throughout the world and greatly influenced nation building.
