French Wars for Religion (1 jan 1562 ano – 1 jan 1598 ano)
Descrição:
The Wars of Religion in France were a series of conflicts between Protestants and Roman Catholics. The spread of French Calvinism persuaded Catherine de Medici to show more tolerance for Huguenots, which angered the Roman Catholic Guise family. Its partisans massacred a Huguenot congregation in 1562, causing an uprising in the provinces. Many inconclusive skirmishes followed, and several compromises were reached, but war resumed after the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. A peace compromise in 1576 allowed Huguenots freedom of worship, and an uneasy peace existed until Huguenot leader Henry of Navarre became heir to the French throne. This led to the War of the Three Henrys and later brought Spain to aid the Roman Catholics. The wars ended with Henry’s embrace of Roman Catholicism and the religious tolerance of the Huguenots guaranteed by the Edict of Nantes.
